👋 About Me

Alex Faquet

Hi, I'm Alex, a second-year Mathematics and Computer Science student at the University of St Andrews. Before university I served two years in the Singapore Armed Forces as Head Instructor of the Military Working Dog Unit, leading a specialised team and being awarded Best Soldier of the Month. It was an experience that shaped how I think about responsibility, leadership under pressure, and getting results when the stakes are real.

Coming to St Andrews, I wanted to channel that drive into something technical. I'm drawn to the intersection of mathematics and computer science, not just as academic disciplines but as tools for building things that actually matter. From quantitative modelling during my actuarial internship at a Southeast Asian insurtech, to contributing to an open source constraint solver in Rust, I'm always looking for problems where rigorous thinking and clean engineering come together.

Outside of work and academics, I coach basketball at university level and play golf. The coaching role came after a strong season with the team - I was offered the head coach position, which felt like a natural extension of how I approach most things: understanding a system deeply enough to help others perform better within it.
